Inviting God into your Homeschool Day

Homeschooling with a Biblical worldview seamlessly integrates faith and academics, as shared in "The Lord's Classroom," an article by The Old Schoolhouse® Magazine.

Parents create an educational environment rooted in Biblical principles, nurturing both spiritual and academic growth. Prioritizing Scripture, integrity, compassion, and stewardship, families shape character and prepare students to engage the world with wisdom. Through prayer, curriculum choices, and intentional discipleship, parents guide their children to view learning as a journey guided by God's truth, equipping them to fulfill their unique purpose in His kingdom.

ne advantage to homeschooling is that families can teach their children the ways of God. A Biblical worldview and how to approach life is essential for success for young minds. The family is the divine institution that God ordains to be the most important influence for children. Family is where the central classroom for life is established. Children best learn the foundation for living when Jesus is the focus. In an atmosphere of love and interesting subject material, kids will receive all that you offer. According to God’s Word, the education of children is the responsibility of parents (Deut. 6:7; Eph. 6:2,4; Prov. 22:6). It’s most important!

Without knowledge of God, children won’t know their purpose or may believe anything that’s thrown at them. They won’t have skills to think logically. When children read stories from the Bible, they are introduced to a logical sequence of principles from Genesis to Revelation. Knowing that God created them establishes the next thought: He made them for a reason.

I saw this firsthand when I was tutoring an 18-year-old attending junior college. His father hired me to tutor him in English 101 because he had a learning disability that caused reading problems. I took on the challenge, and we met three times a week for the whole semester. The first few weeks were a disaster because I felt I was not getting anywhere with him. He seemed upset every time he came to my house. I would pray before he arrived asking the Lord to help us both.

One day he came in with tears. I didn’t want to intrude, but I was compelled with a mother’s heart to ask what was wrong. He said that he was junk and couldn’t do anything right! I immediately told him that God didn’t make junk! I said, "You were made for a purpose!" We then got into a discussion about the concept of individuality and how God made everyone wonderfully unique. He surmised that it would mean there’s something special about everyone then. The idea of creation and purpose was essential for him to be ok with his disability and to move on with a goal. After more conversation, the realization of a personal God came to him like lightning. The Lord had touched his intellect and spirit with one simple principle.

I asked him what he was interested in doing, and he told me he loved working with computers. So, we spent some time discussing the possibilities of such a career. From that day on, this young man had a new approach to his disability, and his work improved. He realized his disability was very much a part of his uniqueness.

I spent one more semester with him his second year just to assist him with some skills, but the improvement was remarkable. This student was previously not able to move forward in his writing because he didn’t feel there was any reason. He ended up passing with Cs, and his father was amazed at the transformation.

The Bible is the main textbook where life’s problems are played out and solutions found. The written Word of God beautifully demonstrates scenarios that pertain to our own lives. This brings a very personalized approach to education. God becomes the main teacher guiding us in personal, social, and political arenas. The examples are there to examine and to apply to our own lives.

When I told my 5-year-old, Jay, the story of Adam and Eve and how they were thrown out of paradise wearing animal skins, he thought for a while then said, "It’s a good thing, because we’d all be running around naked today!" Profound conclusion for a 5-year-old, I’d say. I was thrilled to be present when he shared his thoughts. Need I say more why I answered God’s call to homeschool my children!

Homeschooling has proven to be the best thing I ever did, as a parent and a Christian. Preparing an atmosphere that provided a nurturing, selective education for my children resulted in remarkable rewards that exceeded my expectations. It afforded me the privilege to watch my children’s development day-to-day as well as savor the crowning moments of their learning experiences. I became acutely aware of the significance of being present to enjoy them in their brilliance and to comfort them in their trials! Right from the start, I knew it would be my life’s work that would forever remain closest to my heart.

As I look back to those cherished days, the greatest reason for our success becomes clear. It was not my classroom but God’s. It was His school, and He orchestrated everything! His presence weaved the tapestry of our lives, so daily activity became exciting and fun. Our academics were Bible-based, so as we studied each subject, we became closer to knowing God and His ways. Our classroom was a heavenly laboratory where God’s microscope opened our eyes that magnified His exquisite principles! Throughout the years, we saw many spiritual blessings in our lives that still linger, only to become a more powerful witness as time goes on.
